Allegro, John.  The Mystery of the Dead Sea Scrolls Revealed.  NY:  Gramercy (Penguin Books), 1956, Gramercy edition 1981.  211p. (This is an update and revision of the 1956 original edition by one of the original review and translation committee evaluating the Dead Sea Scrolls.  The author provides excellent historical information and context for the finds and the difficult work of the select committee of scholars.  He includes some of the biblical texts from Qumran in translation, comparing with the Septuagint Greek translation, which was used by the first Christians and Hellenistic Jews, and the Masoretic Hebrew text translation.  Some interesting insights on historical, cultural and theological factors are highlighted.  A very interesting study!  I have read several publications about the Dead Sea Scrolls and two collections for translation of the texts, but still learned -- or perhaps re-learned -- many interesting things from this title.  Allegro provides many insights into the way of life of the Qumran community and their religious beliefs and practices, as well as other sects of Judaism extant at the time of Christ and the next century.)  Borrowed 8 November 2023.  Read 16-22 November 2023.  Bible Backgrounds (History, Archaeology, 1st Century Jewish Sects)

Howarth, David.  The Voyage of the Armada:  The Spanish Story.  NY:  Viking Press, 1981.  256p.  (This is the play by play story of the Spanish Armada sent by King Philip of Spain and Portugal to invade England and add that kingdom to his empire in the 1500s.  This is the first story of the event in English from the archives of the Spanish Archives of King Philip, correlated with the English archives on the event.  The Armada was the largest naval fleet ever gathered for one purpose in history.  King Philip was an absolute monarch who believed he was the instrument of God on earth.  There were matters of personal offense and retribution behind this military campaign, which Howarth narrates in understandable detail.  But Philip thought it his duty on behalf of God and the Pope to punish the Protestant heretics of Queen Elizabeth’s England.  This is an exciting, vivid and coherent story of the buildup, gathering and provisioning the armada that Philip had gathered from every corner of his worldwide empire, and of its hapless experiences on this impossible adventure.  His advisors warned him that he was leaving his American and Asian domains unguarded to implement this unheard of naval venture.  But this was a divine plan, and Philip could not be dissuaded.  It took months to gather provisions from all over Spain, Portugal and the Mediterranean domains of the king.  I learned many details about seafaring in the age of sailing ships, totally dependent upon the vagaries of wind direction and speed and the danger of North Atlantic storms.  The day-by-day saga is reconstructed in engaging scenes as the story of the greatest defeat of this novel naval invasion force, and the hundreds of ships and the thousands of men of many nationalities who were destroyed in this foolhardy adventure.)  Bought 23 September 2023 in Arlington, Texas.  Read 5-11 October 2023.  History (European History, Spanish History)
